The most recent of the Bergerac museums was inaugurated in the summer of 2003. It is the fruit of the endowment made by the sculptor Constantin Papachristopoulos, 'Costi' being the name under which he worked. A considerable renovation of the two Presbytery cellars has enabled his work to be displayed in what the visitors will surely find an intimist atmosphere.

The sculptor...
Constantin Papachristopoulos, named 'Costi', was born on November 27th 1906 in Athens and died on March 3rd 2004. He made a point of particularly congratulating the municipality of Bergerac for the substantial investment undertaken on this project. A lover of the Dordogne, he often came to stay in Monbazillac, visiting his friends Andre-Yves and Arlette Portnoff, (biographers).

The sculptures and busts of men, women and young girls are in bronze and in plaster… they carry us away into the different social circles frequented by the sculptor.

The History of Bergerac

The name of Bergerac is linked to the existence of a castle built at the end of the 11th century on the banks of the Dordogne river, and which attracts a population until then scattered across the plain.

The borough around the castle expanded and one century later became a stopover for travellers, pilgrims and traders. This growth was confirmed by the building of the Saint-James church and of a hospital. In the 13th century, the development of wine growing and expansion of trading led to the building of a bridge over the Dordogne. Committed to the borough movement, the town acquired freedoms and franchises, which were at the core of its wealth since it could then export its wine. The town grew and expanded to suburbs where begging order convents were established. Cereal growing fields bordered the town while the vineyard already covered the hills.


Remparts & port

In the middle of the 14th century, the city was caught unaware by the One Hundred Years War, but managed to safeguard its freedom and independence through its diplomatic strategy. However, it lost half of its “fiscal” population.

Following demographic improvement, the local authorities reorganised urban life and regulated public hygiene. Trading prosperity returned with Peace, but the population fell for the Calvinist ideals. The quiet trading city then became a protestant stronghold, where convents and churches were burnt down.

Despite the Religious conflicts, the Bergerac population lived peacefully and flourished under the protection of its defences. The development of the printing industry generated significant activity in Bergerac, then referred to as “Little Geneva”. The new wealth was revealed through great architectural projects, among which the Peyrarède Hall built in 1604. This bright independence period ended with the recovery of cities by Louis XIII. Opening their doors to the royal armed forces, the people of Bergerac organised a grand welcome for the sovereign. The King ordered that the fortifications be pulled down and a citadel built on the Eastern side of the town. He established an infantry regiment, and set up a mission of Récollet fathers. Reformed and Roman Catholics managed to live together more or less until the new persecutions and “dragonnades”. At the end of the 17th century, the revocation of the Edict of Nantes under Louis XIV emptied Bergerac of its most committed actors. These influential people quite often sought asylum in England or Holland, where they reinforced already existing trading links with the Bergerac vineyard.


Le grand port de Bergerac

In the 18th century, under Louis XV, the overall living conditions of the Bergerac population improved. Factories and the earthenware industry expanded. Three earthenware businesses established themselves in the La Madeleine suburb, and manufactured items that were sometimes sent as far as America.

Bergerac maintained its position as a significant regional trading place, but had not recovered its former vitality. The wine trading, although still gainful, did not benefit all the social strata; it was still lucrative for the middle class and the coopers (there were still 74 operating in 1724).

However, in the 19th century, the local port activity gave the town a new boost. 150,000 tons of merchandise were treated every year, and 1,500 boat movements kept the port alive. The city expanded towards the North. However, the introduction of railway transport gradually caused the regression and end of transport on the flat-bottomed “gabares” and the impoverishment of the old town.

Vine louse was also a turning point in the local economy. This vine disease from America, and which devastated the Bergerac vineyard in 1880, forced the wine-makers to replant on better plots. The graft of a French vine stock to American roots impervious to the parasite re- launched the wine making activity.

In the 20th century, the setting up of an explosives and powder plant in 1915, known as the “Poudrerie”, changed the city landscape and doubles its population. Tobacco growing from the beginning of the century also triggered a significant economic revival. In 1927, the Tobacco Experimental Institute was opened. The post-war years were thriving, and Bergerac became the French capital of tobacco.

WWII started. Locally organised, the Resistance worked efficiently to whisk to Spain the British and American airmen shot down. It received many parachute droppings and forwarded information to the allied forces. Great damage will be suffered by the Roumanière airfield on 5th March 1944 by the Americans, and 18th March by the British. Several buildings were then destroyed. A monument commemorating the Resistance members and deportation victims was erected in the town centre, on the Place Gambetta.

Bergerac is today a lively city, constantly expanding. Tourism and wine making are now its major economic supports.

Tourists have now replaced the wine trading on the “gabares”, and the town lives according to the seasons; its constant trading activity is boosted by a variety of events during the Summer period.

Throughout the skies, a recurrent ballet of large planes is evidence of the dramatic increase in traffic at the Bergerac Dordogne Perigord airport since 2003.

Since the “Roumanière” airport opening in 1934, this represents a significant development: airlines now connect Bergerac with a number of U. K. (London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Nottingham, Birmingham, Exeter, Southampton) and north European cities (Brussels-Charleroi and Rotterdam), and Paris. The historical link with Northern Europe is thus unexpectedly extended.

As it stands now, the city offers a subtle blend of abundant evidence of past times as well as modernity. This up-to-date feeling is supported by high-tech businesses, and also by numerous annual shows and exhibitions. A truly alive past involving houses design and the old town alleys that you will enjoy discovering by yourself or with the help of a Tourism Office guide.
